Carlos Alcaraz Set to Compete Against Everyday Players in $1 Million Single-Point Showdown

Everyday tennis enthusiasts are getting the possibility to win A$1m when they take on elite players - featuring leading player Carlos Alcaraz - in a winner-takes-all point prior to the year's first major

Tournament officials of the Australian Open have revealed the Seven-Figure Quick-Fire Competition, which will pit 10 amateur players against elite athletes in a knockout tournament at the tournament grounds

The Unique Event Will Work

Competitors are set to play 'the decision-making game' to establish who takes the serve or return position, and whoever wins the point will move forward to the subsequent phase

The champion of the event will receive £490,000

For comparison, players who made it to the semi-finals of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won substantial prize money

The New York major hosted a restructured, standalone combined gender tournament in the eighth month which prompted top singles players to take part, with the champions receiving $1m

The Australian Open held its inaugural One Point Slam earlier this year, but the prize fund was a smaller amount and it generated little publicity

One top competitor was the only top-10 player competing, and his run concluded when he put the one and only serve granted failing to clear the net in his penultimate round

Competition Details

Planners have not detailed exactly how the event will function, but it is projected to emulate a similar format to the previous version

The professionals will be granted to have a single serve and the non-professionals twice - as is the standard practice in traditional tennis

While it is not certain how the draw will work, there will be multiple elimination stages and the location will be the main stadium rather than the alternative court

The concluding rounds will take place in a evening slot instead of early afternoon

Participation Requirements

Local players - or foreign participants who have enrolled with the national federation - can compete in 'quick-match event' events at their local tennis clubs

The victors of the grassroots tournaments will then go into a random pairing, with an everyday competitor from every geographic division chosen to participate in the 'final competition' in a night session on the specified date

There will also be a preliminary competition in December which non-professionals, lower ranked pros, celebrities and athletic celebrities can participate in

It commences on early January and the successful competitors will go into the following day's 'final showdown' with the other eight amateurs and 10 professionals

"No matter your experience, the final champion will walk away with the award. Entries will begin shortly at facilities nationwide"

Event organizers said there were "additional stars to be unveiled imminently", while the event portal indicated "famous personalities" would be involved
